03/01/2017

In a scenario still characterised by a strong economic recession, Paraíba was again highlighted in the retail sales of the country, according to the monthly Survey of Commerce (PMC) released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on Tuesday. Retail sales volume in Paraiba reacted in October with a rise of 0.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, which was the second best rate in the country. In addition to Paraíba, only Roraima (5.1%) had sales growth in October compared to last year.Brazilian trade, on the other hand, fell sharply by 8.2%.

According to IBGE, of the 26 federation units and the Federal District, only Roraima and Paraíba had positive retail rates in October compared to last year. The units that recorded the highest falls were Pará (18.7%), Amapá (16.9%) and Rondônia (15.4%). In the comparison between September and October, sales of Paraíba retail also grew 1.4%, while the country maintained a decrease of 0.8%.

In the January to October period, Paraiba’s retail trade reduced the volume of sales from 4.0% to -3.2%.The index is lower in the country only to the states of Roraima (+1.2) and Minas Gerais (-1.5%), showing resistance in the second year of strong economic recession and without resumption of growth. The country had a worsening in the retraction of the retail, reaching now in the accumulated of ten months the fall of 6.7%.

The manager of Services and Commerce of IBGE, Isabela Nunes Pereira, revealed that “the stability in the payment of the public servants of the State must have a direct relation with the result of the retail”. A third of the wealth generated in Paraíba comes from the public administration, which still shows a strong participation and relation of the public sector in the economy of the State.
